Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a prominent cleric and his wife for attempting to smuggle 11 kilograms of "skunk" (a potent strain of cannabis) through the Gbaji checkpoint in Lagos.
The suspects, Pastor Afolabi Hodonu, 45, of the Celestial Church of Christ, Agonvi Sea Beach, and his wife, Success Hodonu, 35, were apprehended on Thursday, April 2, 2026.
The illicit substance was discovered meticulously hidden within modified compartments of their Honda Pilot SUV.
According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the arrest was linked to a previous interception of a fake security agent, Sunday Samuel, who was caught moving 24.5kg of skunk from the Seme border.
Nationwide Anti-Narcotic Breakthroughs:
UK-Bound Cocaine: At the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, 3.10kg of cocaine was found concealed in tins of palm kernel oil destined for the UK.
A follow-up operation led to the arrest of the syndicate kingpin, 52-year-old King Arinze, and the discovery of a warehouse containing 886 modified tins.
Terrorist Supplier: In Borno State, 28-year-old Aisha Adamu was arrested for supplying "Colorado" (synthetic cannabis) to bandit groups operating between Nigeria and Chad.
Exploiting Children: In Ibadan, a 40-year-old dealer, Ayantola Omodunmomi, was arrested for allegedly using her 11-year-old daughter to distribute drugs.
Bulk Seizures: Over 1,300kg of skunk was recovered from a warehouse in Edo State, and 76,600 tramadol pills were seized across Adamawa and Benue states.
NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.) commended the officers, stating that the agency will continue to "choke the supply lines" of cartels, regardless of whether they hide behind religious titles or complex concealment methods.
