Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has issued a formal apology to the club's supporters following a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
The Reds' defensive linchpin admitted that the team effectively "gave up" during a dismal second-half display at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
The match was effectively decided by a ruthless Erling Haaland, who netted a first-half brace—including a penalty conceded by Van Dijk himself—before completing his hat-trick shortly after the restart.
Antoine Semenyo added a fourth, leading to a mass exodus of the 8,000 traveling Liverpool fans long before the final whistle.
“I can only apologize to the fans for what we have shown, especially the second half,” Van Dijk stated. “We let our fans down, we let ourselves down, and the manager. At a certain point, we gave up, and that definitely hurts me.”
