Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have apprehended Yusuf Adebayo, a generator technician, following allegations that he raped a seven-year-old girl in the Ijebu-Ode area.
The minor was reportedly visiting her aunt for the holidays when the incident occurred.
The victim’s aunt, Odunayo, discovered the crime after noticing unusual stains on the child’s underwear while doing laundry.
Although the girl initially kept quiet, she later complained of severe stomach pains and bleeding after returning to her mother’s house.
Upon further questioning, she pointed out the suspect’s room as the location of the assault. Medical examinations have since confirmed that the child was indeed defiled.
The case has taken a darker turn as the family alleges they are being harassed by members of a local group known as Regberegbe.
According to the victim's mother, Toyin, the group has threatened to use traditional deities against them if they do not drop the charges.
“Some Regberegbe members had come to threaten us that we should drop the matter and that they would take us to Imale (a deity in the area),” the family stated.
Confirming the arrest, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, stated that the suspect has been transferred to the Gender and Domestic Violence Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
