Nigerian National and Spouse Risk 50-Year Sentence Following Arrest for Identity Theft in New York
A United States-based Nigerian, Opeyemi Olujobi (28), and his wife, Jennie Davidson (29), are facing up to 50 years in federal prison following their arrest in Poughkeepsie, New York.
The couple is accused of orchestrating a sophisticated credit card fraud scheme that resulted in over $500,000 in unauthorised purchases.
According to Jay Clayton, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, the duo allegedly used stolen identities—including Social Security numbers and dates of birth—to take over more than 200 store credit card accounts.
The suspects reportedly changed victim addresses to their own residence in Hopewell Junction and requested replacement cards after reporting the originals as lost or stolen.
Video surveillance captured the couple using the fraudulent cards at various retail outlets to buy gift cards and merchandise totaling $575,000.
Furthermore, Davidson is accused of laundering the proceeds through an online betting account.
Olujobi and Davidson are charged with conspiracy to commit mail, wire, and bank fraud, while Davidson faces an additional money laundering charge.
