Nigeria’s aviation sector is on the brink of a total collapse as domestic carriers, under the Airlines Operators of Nigeria (AON), have threatened to suspend all operations effective Monday, April 20, 2026.
The ultimatum follows a staggering 300% surge in the price of Aviation Fuel (Jet A1), which has skyrocketed from ₦900 per litre in February to ₦3,300 per litre in less than two months.
In an exclusive report by Daily Sun, a letter signed by AON President Abdulmunaf Sarina and addressed to energy marketers revealed that fuel now accounts for over 40% of total operational costs.
The association warned that airlines can no longer absorb the "haemorrhaging" financial losses and that raising ticket prices further would result in "flying empty planes."
The AON has accused fuel marketers of exploiting geopolitical tensions in the Middle East to justify arbitrary price hikes that far outstrip global crude oil trends.
One unnamed airline has already been forced to ground its entire fleet since March 13 due to these "existential threats."
“The actions of fuel marketers are effectively decimating the aviation industry and putting the country’s economy, safety, and security at risk,” the AON stated.
The letter, which serves as a "final plea," has been copied to President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, urging immediate government intervention to prevent a nationwide transport shutdown.
