In a landmark move for Nigerian politics, Senator Nenadi Usman has been elected as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).
The election took place on Tuesday during the party’s national convention held in Umuahia, Abia State.
This victory makes Usman the first woman in Nigeria’s history to be elected as the National Chairman of a major political party.
Her emergence follows a successful stint as the head of the National Caretaker Committee, a role she assumed in September 2024 to resolve leadership vacuums within the party.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently recognized her leadership following a Federal High Court judgment on January 21, 2026, which was later upheld by a unanimous Court of Appeal ruling on April 21, 2026.
In her acceptance speech, the former Finance Minister pledged to unite the party. “I am committed to fostering unity, peace, and reconciliation within the party ahead of the next general elections,” Usman stated.
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, who attended the convention, urged the new leadership to strengthen the party's structures nationwide.
