Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez is reportedly looking to the past to secure the club's future.
According to a report by David Ornstein in The Athletic, José Mourinho has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Álvaro Arbeloa on the Real Madrid bench.
Pérez is said to believe that the Portuguese manager, currently at Benfica, is the only man capable of restoring the club to its former glory.
Mourinho previously managed the "Los Blancos" from 2010 to 2013, famously winning a La Liga title against Pep Guardiola’s legendary Barcelona side.
The deal could be straightforward due to a release clause in Mourinho's contract worth just €3 million, which would allow him to be free ten days after Benfica’s final match on May 16.
The report suggests Pérez wants Mourinho to be the coach who delivers "La Décimosexta"—the club's 16th European title—after the 2026 World Cup. This move could also derail Newcastle United’s long-standing interest in the manager.
