The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully dismantled a cross-border drug syndicate, arresting a 69-year-old medical doctor and an Ivorian national.
The Ivorian suspect, Gohouri Michael, was intercepted at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport while attempting to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Milan, Italy.
According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, Michael had ingested 82 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.49kg. Intelligence-led investigations identified Dr. Chudi Ofomata as the coordinator behind the operation.
Dr. Ofomata was tracked to his residence in Magboro, Ogun State, where he was arrested on March 27 and subsequently flown to Kano for interrogation.
“The hidden figure behind Gohouri was eventually discovered to be Dr Chudi Ofomata... Recovered from him at the point of arrest were 63 grams of promazepam and seven ampoules of promethazine injection,” the statement revealed.
In a separate operation along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, NDLEA operatives intercepted a Chisco Transport luxury bus, recovering 15kg of skunk.
Other significant seizures included 118kg of skunk from a couple in Niger State and the arrest of a 90-year-old man, Pa Friday Ahukanna Chigbu, in Abia State for drug dealing.
