What was meant to be a celebratory Easter Sunday turned into a tragedy in the Ariko community of Kaduna State, as bandits attacked two churches, leaving six worshippers dead.
The gunmen targeted the First ECWA Church and St. Augustine Catholic Church in Kachia Local Government Area during the early morning service.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers surrounded the buildings, opened fire on the congregation, and made away with church offerings.
The victims have been identified as Aminu Soba, Waziri Agunu, Tankoa Haruna, Adamu Jatau, Joseph Gungume, and Rabo Atete.
However, a swift intervention by the Nigerian Army prevented further casualties.
Following a distress call, troops engaged the bandits in a fierce gun battle, successfully rescuing 31 abducted villagers.
“Troops acted on a distress call reporting that armed attackers had invaded a church... Soldiers were immediately mobilised and, with support from local residents, tracked the assailants,” the Army confirmed in a statement.
