"I Rejected Myself Before Anyone Else" – Tems Opens Up on Struggles with Accepting Love

Grammy winner Tems interview with Angie Martinez discussing self-rejection and mental health

Grammy-winning superstar Tems has shared a deeply personal look into her mental health journey, revealing how a cycle of self-rejection once hindered her ability to form healthy connections.

Speaking in a recent interview with Angie Martinez, the "Damages" singer confessed that she was so accustomed to feeling rejected that she struggled to accept genuine love when it finally arrived.

Tems explained that her internal state created a barrier, leading her to "expect" rejection as a daily norm.

This mindset made it difficult to embrace the acceptance offered by those who truly cared for her.

“I feel like I had been, in my mind, rejected so much that when I found people that finally accepted me... I was so used to rejecting myself, I couldn’t accept their love. I rejected myself before anybody else, so I was waiting for the rejection,” she admitted.

The Lagos-born producer and songwriter, who recently collaborated with British rapper Dave on "Raindance," emphasized the necessity of self-awareness.

She encouraged her fans to examine their fears to overcome the internal hurdles that block emotional growth.
