The political landscape of Kano State witnessed a major shift on Sunday, April 19, 2026, as former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to rejoin the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Addressing a massive crowd of supporters at his Mundubawa residence, the Sardaunan Kano revealed that his exit was a collective decision made by his Shura Council after weeks of deliberation.
Speaking through his media aide, Professor Sule Ya’u, Shekarau dismissed claims that he is an "opportunist" or "lone ranger."
He insisted that he is not seeking any political appointment or elective office at the age of 71.
Instead, he lamented that the PDP had become too disorganized and "crippled by crisis" over the last three years, leaving his followers without a viable platform for the 2027 elections.
“My main concern is the survival and welfare of my thousands of followers who have been left hanging by the PDP crisis,” Shekarau stated.
The former Minister challenged critics to examine his history, maintaining that he only leaves a party when "justice is murdered" and his supporters are cheated.
As a founding father of the APC, Shekarau’s return is seen as a strategic move to ensure his loyalists have a "seat at the table" in the next political dispensation.
