Edo State Cracks Down on Illegal Orphanage Over Alleged N2 Million Adoption Extortion
The Edo State Government has shut down an illegal orphanage, Uwadia Children Home, in Afuze, following the discovery of a sophisticated adoption scam.
The operation led to the arrest of the proprietress, Mrs. Grace Efe Uwadia, who is currently being investigated at the Aideyan Police Station in Benin City.
The scandal came to light after a victim, Mr. Monday Akpaduma, reported irregularities to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.
Akpaduma alleged he had paid a N250,000 processing fee and was later asked for N1 million, before being told the fee had jumped to N2 million.
Investigations revealed that the orphanage was using fraudulent ministry letterheads to extort unsuspecting adopters.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs confirmed that the children have been evacuated to a safe location for medical care. Authorities are also trailing a staff member of the Owan East Local Government, Mr. Vincent Ogbodo, for alleged collusion.
The government reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for child exploitation and urged the public to verify adoption processes directly through official channels.
