Official: Sultan of Sokoto and Saudi Arabia Declare Friday, March 20 as Eid-el-Fitr 2026
The Muslim Ummah in Nigeria and across the globe are set to celebrate Eid-el-Fitr this Friday, March 20, 2026, marking the successful completion of the holy month of Ramadan.
This follows the official confirmation from the Saudi Arabian authorities and the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, that the crescent moon of Shawwal was not sighted on Wednesday evening.
According to a statement released on Wednesday night by Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs at the Sultanate Council, the National Moon Sighting Committee received no reports of the moon being spotted across Nigeria.
Consequently, Thursday, March 19, remains the 30th day of Ramadan, while Friday becomes the 1st of Shawwal 1447AH.
"His Eminence, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar... has accepted the report and accordingly declared Friday, March 20, 2026, as the first day of Shawwal 1447AH, the day of Eid-El-Fitr," the statement confirmed.
The Sultan felicitated with the Muslim community, urging them to maintain the spirit of the holy month by praying for the peace, progress, and development of Nigeria.
Similar announcements were echoed by HaramainInfo, confirming that Saudi Arabia would also observe the festivities on Friday.
Eid-el-Fitr remains a significant period of prayer, charity, and reflection for millions of believers worldwide.
