NRC Resumes Full Abuja-Kaduna Train Services with Enhanced Safety Protocols
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced the full restoration of train services on the Abuja-Kaduna route following a technical disruption earlier this week.
The Managing Director of the NRC, Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the resumption on Wednesday, assuring passengers that "improved safety and operational measures" have been implemented.
The service disruption occurred at approximately 9:16 a.m. on Monday, March 16, 2026, near Asham Station.
According to technical reports, a rear locomotive attached at Jere Station became detached while the train was in motion.
The detached engine rolled forward and collided with the rear of the train (Service KA2), causing a violent jolt that injured several of the 429 passengers onboard.
“Following the incident on Monday... normal train operations have been fully restored. Passengers can now confidently book tickets,” Opeifa stated.
The NRC boss noted that the return trip from Rigasa, Kaduna, successfully arrived in Abuja on Tuesday, marking the end of the temporary downtime.
While some passengers required medical attention following the collision, the corporation confirmed there were no fatalities.
The NRC is currently working with the National Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the coupling systems to prevent a recurrence.
