A devastating explosion triggered by an improvised explosive device (IED) has claimed the lives of at least eight people in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The blast, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, March 23, 2026, targeted a vital bridge along Luma Road, completely cutting off access between the Luma, Babana, and Agwara communities.
The explosion reportedly happened around 2:00 a.m. when suspected terrorists planted explosives on the bridge, which serves as a major route for traders heading to the Babana border market.
Tragically, a vehicle traveling between Nuku and Woro drove over the device, leading to a fatal blast that killed all seven passengers and the driver instantly.
According to a statement from the Niger State Police Command, the attack appears to be a calculated move by insurgents to disrupt movement and security operations within the forest zones.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident and noted that authorities were alerted later that morning.
“On 23rd March 2026 at about 6.30 am, a report received revealed that on the same date at about 2 am, suspected terrorists within the park forest used an explosive device and bombed a bridge located along Luma road, Borgu LGA. It was discovered that the bridge was damaged by the hoodlums during security operations in the area,” Abiodun stated.
Security forces have since launched a clearance operation in the affected forest areas to flush out the perpetrators and restore safety to the transit corridor.
