Afrobeats heavyweight Davido has announced a bold creative shift, declaring that his upcoming musical projects will strictly prioritize authentic African sounds over "Western" appeal.
Speaking on the Official UK Afrobeats Chart Show with Eddie Kadi on BBC Radio 1Xtra, the singer revealed that his recent global milestones—including multiple Grammy nominations and sold-out arenas—have left him feeling fulfilled and no longer in need of international validation.
“The music that is coming next is very Davido, it is very African. We have done it [Western sounds], so I am not really looking to do that anymore,” the singer stated.
Davido also touched on his dominance across the continent, particularly in South Africa.
He claimed that 80% of South Africans are familiar with his discography, a feat he attributes to his consistent collaborations with Amapiano artists and frequent tours in the region.
He noted the difficulty of an Afrobeats artist hitting No. 1 on South African radio, a milestone he has achieved despite the local market's heavy preference for American and domestic music.
The announcement comes just days after the reveal of his first-ever curated UK festival, "Davido & Friends," set for August 14, 2026, at London’s Crystal Palace Bowl.
While no official release date for the new music has been set, fans are anticipating a raw, high-energy return to the roots that first made "OBO" a household name.
