Gunmen suspected to be bandits have killed one person, abducted five, and burned a church and police station in Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State. The attack on the United Missionary Church of Africa and police facility occurred around 3:40 a.m. on Saturday.
Niger State Police Spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun confirmed the assailants used dynamite to set the station ablaze after overpowering tactical teams. They then torched part of the church before abducting victims.
The son of the late Emir, Murtala Dantoro, lamented the deteriorating security, stating “innocent lives are being lost, farmers are abandoning their farmlands, economic activities have collapsed.” He and the Chairman of CAN in Niger State, Bishop Bulus Yohanna, urgently appealed for a permanent military formation in Agwara to deter attacks.
This incident adds to a surge of violence in Niger State, including the kidnapping of over 300 students in Papiri last November and a January attack in Kasuwan Daji that left 42 dead.
