The strike by the Joint Health Sector Unions has entered its third month, crippling services in federal hospitals across Nigeria and leaving patients stranded. Critical departments like pharmacies and laboratories remain shut, forcing patients to seek care at private facilities or overwhelmed state hospitals.
JOHESU Chairman at OAUTHC, Abdullateef Adeyeni, revealed the strike has cost his hospital alone about N1.5 billion in lost revenue. “Patients are suffering. The Federal Government has turned a deaf ear,” he stated.
While federal facilities are paralysed, state hospitals in Ekiti and Benue are mostly operational, though some face separate strikes over unpaid salaries and poor infrastructure. At EKSUTH, JOHESU Acting Chairman Adewale Adeosun noted a surge in patients: “If you come to EKSUTH now, it is just like a market.”
The strike stems from demands for the implementation of a 2018 circular adjusting the Consolidated Health Salary Scale. Union leaders urge the government to act within weeks to avert further collapse.
