Eighty of the 177 worshippers abducted from three churches in Kurmin Wali, Kaduna State, have miraculously escaped from their captors and reunited with families. This brings the total number of escapees to 91, with 11 having fled shortly after the January 18 kidnapping.
Kurmin Wali Village Head, Ishaku Dan’azumi, confirmed the development, stating the latest escapees first took refuge in neighbouring communities before returning home. He lamented that “the remaining 86 other worshippers are still being held in the forest by the bandits.”
Dan’azumi appealed to the government and military to “expedite action to secure the release of the remaining 86 people,” criticizing those attempting to politicize the community's trauma.
The mass abduction, initially disputed by police and local authorities, was confirmed after a list of 177 victims surfaced. Gunmen had stormed Catholic, ECWA, and Cherubim & Seraphim churches during service, shutting gates and marching congregants into the bush.
Kaduna State Police Spokesperson Mansir Hassan stated a comprehensive report would be issued soon.
