No fewer than 13 journalists from various media organizations were injured in a serious auto crash on Friday while returning from covering a project commissioning by the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) in Bauchi State.
The crash occurred at Yelwan Duguri, along the Yashi-Yelwan Duguri Road in Alkaleri Local Government Area. The vehicle conveying the journalists veered off the road and tumbled several times, throwing occupants out.
The journalists had just covered the commissioning of a newly constructed Government Secondary School by the Minister of State for Regional Development, Alhaji Uba Maigari Ahmadu.
The victims sustained various injuries, including compound fractures, head injuries, and bruises. They were first taken to Yelwan Duguri Cottage Hospital before being transferred to Bauchi General Hospital for further care.
The injured include reporters from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), The Guardian, The Nation, Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Channels Television, Arise TV, AIT, Bauchi Radio Corporation (BRC), Bauchi State Television (BATV), an online media outlet, and the driver.
Bauchi State Deputy Governor, Auwal Jatau Mohammed, led the Minister and NEDC officials on a sympathy visit to the hospital. He directed that the injured be moved to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) for specialized treatment.
Rescue operations were carried out by fellow journalists, NEDC officials, and sympathizers who helped evacuate the victims. Journalistic equipment, including cameras and mobile phones, was damaged in the crash.
The incident underscores the risks journalists often face while traveling to cover assignments across Nigeria, particularly in rural areas with challenging road conditions.
