The United Kingdom Metropolitan Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 23-year-old Nigerian man, John Temitope Onetufo, in the Lewisham area of London.
According to a statement obtained from the Metropolitan Police website on Monday, the tragic incident occurred on New Year’s Eve in Grove Street, Lewisham. Police said they were alerted to reports of a stabbing at approximately 12:35 p.m., prompting an immediate emergency response.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers attended alongside the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance, where Onetufo was found suffering from a stab wound to the chest. Despite urgent medical attention from paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Police were called at around 12:35 hrs on Wednesday, 31 December, following reports of a fatal stabbing in Grove Street, Lewisham,” the statement read. “A 23-year-old man was treated for a stab wound to the chest but was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. He has since been named as John Temitope Onetufo from Deptford.”
The Met Police confirmed that two suspects—a 17-year-old boy and a 23-year-old man—were arrested on January 2 in connection with the incident. Both suspects remain under investigation as detectives continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack.
Detective Chief Inspector Samantha Townsend, who is leading the investigation, described the arrests as a significant development and appealed to members of the public with useful information to come forward.

“My team has worked relentlessly over recent days to pursue every line of enquiry, and I can confirm that two arrests have now been made in connection with this tragic incident,” Townsend said. “While this is a significant step, our investigation remains ongoing.”
She extended condolences to the victim’s family and friends, adding that the police were committed to ensuring those responsible are brought to justice.
The killing highlights the persistent issue of knife-related violence in the United Kingdom, which has claimed the lives of several individuals, including members of the Nigerian community. In August 2025, PUNCH Metro reported that a 60-year-old Nigerian woman, Nkiru Chima, was found dead with multiple stab wounds in her apartment in Romford, Essex.
Authorities continue to urge witnesses and anyone with relevant information to assist the ongoing investigation.
