Liverpool Football Club have initiated contact with the representatives of former midfielder and managerial target Xabi Alonso to enquire about his availability, according to reports from Spanish outlet AS. The 44-year-old Spaniard, currently without a club after leaving Real Madrid, is said to have given a positive response to the approach.
The report states that Liverpool are attempting to "anticipate what might happen" in their managerial situation and ascertain if they can count on Alonso. This contact comes despite current manager Arne Slot being in charge, following a period of mixed results.
Alonso, a fan favourite from his playing days at Anfield, had previously turned down offers from both Liverpool and Bayern Munich in the spring of 2024, choosing to remain with Bayer Leverkusen at the time. However, his perspective is now reported to have changed following his exit from Real Madrid.
AS claims that "the prospect of seeing the Merseyside every day, just like he did two decades ago, is appealing to him." The positive initial response from his camp is said to be bringing "some relief" to the Liverpool hierarchy as they plan for the future.
