An interim investigation report has identified an Army Colonel as the alleged coordinator of a clandestine network that plotted to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu. The report, sighted by Pinch, reveals the officer allegedly funded, recruited, and motivated other disgruntled military officers across the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
According to the report, the Colonel, whose repeated failures in promotion exams fueled his disaffection, mobilized like-minded officers to conduct covert surveillance of critical national assets. These included the Presidential Villa, major barracks, and international airports in Abuja and Lagos. The plot reportedly entered early operational stages before being uncovered by intelligence agencies in October 2025.
Investigators stated that searches of the Colonel's vehicle uncovered charms and anti-government materials, while a raid on his Abuja residence yielded "very sensitive documents," including assigned roles for principal actors and notes on handling "key national dignitaries" during the planned takeover.
The Defence Headquarters confirmed on Monday that a comprehensive investigation had been concluded, and indicted personnel would be arraigned before a military judicial panel. Sixteen officers, ranging from Captain to Brigadier General, are reportedly in custody over the alleged conspiracy, which was planned for October 25, 2025.
The report warns that the threat was "clear and immediate," with the cross-service nature of the network and involvement of senior officers posing grave implications for national stability. Investigations have expanded to include civilian contacts and alleged financiers.
