At least four villagers were burned to death on Thursday evening when armed bandits launched a reprisal attack on Gwargwaba village in Zamfara State, following the community’s refusal to pay illegal levies. The assailants set homes ablaze, destroyed food stores, and slaughtered livestock.
The attack in Nahuce District, Bungudu Local Government Area, occurred around 6:00 p.m., with heavily armed invaders trapping victims inside their burning houses. Multiple buildings, food supplies, and livestock were destroyed, plunging survivors into immediate humanitarian crisis.
Security analyst Bakatsine, who detailed the incident on X, stated the assault was retaliatory. “The bandits stormed the village with sophisticated weapons, burning down homes, food stores and livestock. Four residents were burned alive in their houses. The assault reportedly came after the community rejected the unlawful taxes demanded by the attackers,” he posted.
Local sources confirmed the attackers’ brutality, noting that the destruction of food stores and livestock has left families without sustenance or means of livelihood. The incident underscores the escalating violence in Zamfara, where communities are increasingly targeted for enforcing illegal “taxes” by criminal gangs.
This attack adds to a grim pattern of bandit violence in North-West Nigeria, where rural communities face relentless assaults, kidnappings, and extortion despite ongoing military operations.
