Popular social media activist Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has ignited a firestorm of criticism against the Ekiti State Government over the health sector allocation in its proposed 2026 budget. In a viral video, VDM accused Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration and state lawmakers of prioritizing self-interest over citizens' welfare.
The activist highlighted that in a total budget proposal of approximately N415.5 billion, a mere N68 million was allocated to primary healthcare services for the entire state. He contrasted this with what he termed inflated allocations for lawmakers' comfort.
“God will punish you — not just you, but every member of the Ekiti State House of Assembly. When you do not fear God, you will face His judgment,” VDM declared in the video.
Questioning the logic of the allocation, VDM pointed to Ekiti’s population, estimated at over 2.3 million since the 2006 census. “Even if we are conservative, let’s say Ekiti now has over 20 million residents — elderly citizens, pregnant women, children — and you allocate just N68 million for primary healthcare?” he queried.
He further alleged that only N1.6 million was budgeted for drugs, laboratory services, and medical consumables, while lawmakers earmarked N618 million for honoraria and sitting allowances, N150 million for office furniture maintenance, N24 million for refreshments and meals, and over N100 million for new office equipment.
“You people spend more on food, furniture and allowances than on hospitals and human lives. God will punish you,” he stated.
VDM also criticized what he called duplicated and vague budget lines, questioning the need for huge allocations for new equipment while also budgeting for maintaining existing ones. He lamented that while public officials access quality healthcare abroad or privately, ordinary citizens, especially in rural areas, are left with poorly funded and ill-equipped primary health centers.
The video has triggered widespread online debate, with many Nigerians echoing his concerns over budgetary priorities and transparency in governance.
