Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has raised concern over the increasing spread of small arms in the country. He said the situation may worsen if state governments continue to set up vigilante groups without proper training.
Kwankwaso made this known in a statement on Monday while reacting to recent developments in the country.
According to a report by Leadership News on Tuesday 9 December, 2025, he warned that the creation of untrained security outfits could expose the country to more security risks.
He explained that although the intention behind forming local security groups may be good, the lack of professional training could lead to the uncontrolled spread of weapons. He also congratulated the newly appointed Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, expressing confidence in his ability to strengthen national security.

Kwankwaso added that the Federal Government seems overwhelmed by the rising insecurity, pointing out that some individuals are now taking advantage of the situation to form personal militias. He warned that this trend could further threaten the peace and unity of the country.
He also expressed worry over the rise in ethnic profiling, arbitrary arrests and harassment of citizens in different parts of Nigeria. According to him, hate speech and online intimidation have worsened national tension.
Kwankwaso urged the government to act quickly to address these issues before they escalate further.
He said the country must be protected from the dangerous spread of weapons and division along ethnic lines.
