The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said he has no regrets openly supporting President Bola Tinubu since 2022, insisting that his political stance was guided by character, integrity, and fairness.
Wike made the statement while speaking at a special event organised to mark his 58th birthday anniversary, held in the early hours of Saturday at his residence in Abuja. The event attracted political leaders and associates from across party lines.
According to a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the former Rivers State Governor said he never hid his support for Tinubu before, during, or after the 2023 presidential election.
Wike recalled that he was the only prominent figure within the main opposition party at the time who openly declared support for Tinubu, explaining that his decision was rooted in the principles of equity, fairness, and justice, as well as his belief that power should rotate to the South.
He further argued that his political influence and leadership capacity were evident in Rivers State during the elections, where the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the presidential poll, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured victories in the governorship, National Assembly, State House of Assembly, and local government elections under his leadership.
The birthday celebration witnessed the presence of National Assembly lawmakers from Rivers State, members of the State House of Assembly led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, local government chairmen, and other political associates.
Several speakers praised Wike’s political courage and achievements. Rivers State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Ambassador Desmond Akawor, described him as the “naked wire of Rivers politics,” adding that President Tinubu made the right choice by working with him.
In his response, Wike thanked his supporters for standing by him, saying criticisms and abuses only strengthen his resolve. He pledged to continue working with his political family in the interest of Rivers State and Nigeria.
The event concluded with special prayers for the Minister and his family.
