The Nigerian Army has denied claims that soldiers shot and killed women during a protest in Lamurde, Yola, Adamawa State. Reports on Monday suggested that soldiers escorting the 23 Brigade Commander, Amechi Agwu, opened fire on 12 women protesters, causing multiple casualties.
According to The Guardian on Tuesday 9 December, 2025, the Nigerian Army said the reports were false and aimed at tarnishing its image. Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Captain Olusegun Abidoye, explained that neither the brigade commander nor his soldiers were present at the scene. The commander was attending the Chief of Army Staff’s weekly operational briefing virtually at the time. The clash stemmed from a land dispute between the Chobo and Bachama communities, and troops were deployed to restore peace.

Abidoye added that a local armed militia attacked the soldiers during the operation. In the exchange of gunfire, three militia members were neutralized, while others fled. He confirmed that the women who died were victims of the untrained militia mishandling weapons, not the soldiers. The Army said the troops acted professionally to control the clashes and protect civilians.
The Nigerian Army reassured the public that it remains committed to maintaining order in conflict-prone areas and urged media houses to verify reports before publication.
