At least five vehicles were destroyed in a devastating fire outbreak that occurred in the early hours of Wednesday along the Epe–Ijebu-Ode Expressway in the Eredo Local Council Development Area of Lagos State.
The incident, which happened at about 2:00 a.m., involved a 45,000-litre tanker conveying diesel that reportedly lost control while climbing a hilly section of the expressway. The tanker fell on its side, spilling its highly flammable contents across the road before bursting into flames.
The resulting inferno spread rapidly, engulfing nearby vehicles parked along the roadside. Eyewitness accounts and images shared on social media revealed the scale of destruction caused by the fire.
A Facebook user identified as Epe Lawa, who shared footage from the scene, described the incident as tragic. “The people of Epe were thrown into deep mourning in the early hours of today following a devastating tanker explosion along the Epe expressway,” he wrote.
“Eyewitnesses confirmed that at about 1:50 a.m., a fully loaded tanker suddenly lost balance, fell, and burst into flames, causing widespread destruction.”

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson, Shakiru Amodu, disclosed that the tanker, with registration number KWK 833 SK, was carrying diesel at the time of the accident.
According to Amodu, the vehicles destroyed in the fire included a Mazda car, Nissan car, Honda Accord, and a Toyota Hilux, in addition to the tanker itself.
“The incident happened at about 2 a.m. We received a distress call and upon arrival, discovered that a 45,000-litre tanker loaded with diesel had fallen and spilled its contents before being engulfed in fire,” Amodu stated.
“Firefighters were able to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other areas. No life was lost in the incident.”
Emergency responders successfully managed the situation, preventing further damage to surrounding properties and traffic infrastructure.
