FG Announces Reopening of 47 Unity Schools Weeks After Closure Over Insecurity

Federal Government announces reopening of unity schools after security upgrade

The Federal Government has announced the reopening of 47 Unity Colleges across the country that were earlier closed due to security concerns, signalling a major step toward restoring stability in the nation’s education sector.

The announcement was made on Thursday in a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Education, confirming that academic activities have now fully resumed in the affected schools.

According to the statement signed by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, the decision followed the strengthening of security architecture within and around the schools, in collaboration with relevant security agencies.

“After the strengthening of security architecture within and around the affected schools, academic activities have fully resumed. Students have returned safely to their campuses, with many currently concluding their December academic programmes, while others have successfully completed their examinations,” the statement read.

The ministry reassured parents, guardians, and the general public that the safety, welfare, and well-being of students remain a top priority for the Federal Government.

It added that government authorities are continuing to work closely with security agencies to sustain stability and restore normalcy within school environments nationwide.

“The Federal Government remains resolute in its responsibility to protect every Nigerian child and to uphold their fundamental right to education in a safe and secure environment,” the ministry stated.

The statement further noted that the administration places strong emphasis on human capital development, recognising education as a critical pillar for national growth and development. As such, it remains determined to prevent disruptions to the academic calendar despite prevailing security challenges.

The ministry explained that the safe return of students and the successful conduct of examinations in several unity colleges underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring continuity in learning.

Unity schools, also known as Federal Government Colleges, were temporarily shut down in some states following rising security threats, particularly attacks targeting educational institutions.

With the reopening, stakeholders have expressed hope that improved security measures will allow uninterrupted learning and restore confidence among parents and students nationwide. ChannelsTv
