A shocking case of child murder has rocked South Africa as a pastor has been charged with the gruesome killing of his 12-year-old sister-in-law.
The suspect, Sonwabo Nqayi, founder of the Holy Burning Fire Ministries of God, appeared in court on Thursday, July 24, 2025, to face multiple charges related to the kidnapping and murder of Lithaliyanda Ntini, the younger sister of his wife.
According to a statement from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Nqayi, 39, allegedly kidnapped the child on June 24, 2025, and took her to nearby bushes in Motherwell, where he murdered her and set her body ablaze. The victim had been declared missing after leaving for a nearby shop and never returning.
Her charred remains were discovered in the early hours of June 27 at approximately 2:10 am.
“The prosecution has successfully opposed the bail application of Sonwabo Nqayi,” the NPA stated. “He is charged with premeditated murder, kidnapping, and defeating or obstructing the course of justice.”
The court denied bail on the grounds that the crime was premeditated and that the accused could evade trial or intimidate witnesses due to his influence as a religious leader.
The case has been remanded until August 28, 2025, as further investigations are ongoing.
The NPA emphasized its resolve to ensure justice for vulnerable victims, especially in cases involving children and abuse of authority.
As the case unfolds, the incident has sparked national outrage and renewed conversations about abuse in religious institutions.
