Tragedy struck Imo State on Friday, July 25, 2025, as gunmen launched a brutal attack on three villages in the Arondizuogu area of Ideato North Local Government, leaving at least seven people dead and several others injured.
The affected communities—Umualoma, Ndiakunwanta, and Ndiejezie—were reportedly invaded by armed assailants riding motorbikes who opened fire indiscriminately on locals. Eyewitnesses revealed that the victims were mostly shop owners, customers, and villagers relaxing at local bars or playing board games when the shooters arrived.
According to one source, “People who were out drinking, selling goods, or just hanging out were gunned down. Some were even playing draft when the attack started.”
In a statement released by the Imo State Police Command, spokesman Henry Okoye confirmed the incident and revealed that the attack had left seven confirmed fatalities, with more victims receiving emergency treatment.
The statement blamed the violence on gunmen suspected to be affiliated with the proscribed IPOB/ESN group, and stressed that tactical units have been deployed to restore order and hunt down the attackers.
Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, condemned the attack in strong terms, labeling it “barbaric, inhumane, and totally unacceptable.” He assured the public that intelligence assets are fully engaged and a manhunt is underway to bring the killers to justice.
“The Command has deployed adequate operational assets to comb the affected areas. The situation is now under control,” Danjuma stated, while extending condolences to the bereaved families and praying for the recovery of the injured.
The police urge residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as the operation continues.
