Legendary football manager Jose Mourinho has reignited Premier League debates after boldly claiming that his 2004–2006 Chelsea squad was better than Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’.
Speaking in an interview with Canal 11, Mourinho insisted that the Chelsea team he built during his first spell at Stamford Bridge outperformed the Gunners, even if Arsenal went unbeaten in the 2003–04 season.
“I think Chelsea was the best Premier League team ever,” Mourinho declared. “Arsenal were invincible, but they were invincible in one season. We were more invincible than them in two seasons.”
He continued, “They won 38 games, we won 46. But those 46 were spread across two seasons. They were a fantastic team,” he admitted, before adding that Chelsea’s dominance in the mid-2000s was more consistent and impactful.
Mourinho took charge of Chelsea in 2004 after winning the Champions League with Porto. His debut Premier League season was record-breaking, with Chelsea conceding just 15 goals and amassing 95 points — a record that stood for years.
While Arsenal’s 2003–04 Invincibles team remains a historical marvel for going unbeaten in a single season, Mourinho’s comments suggest he values overall dominance and long-term consistency over a one-season feat.
