Delta man kills colleague after collecting ransom in betrayal murder case

Tragedy struck in Umunede, Delta State, as police arrested a man identified simply as Moses for the brutal murder of his colleague, 38-year-old Victor Ochei, after allegedly collecting a N300,000 ransom from the victim’s family.

According to community reports, the incident occurred on Sunday, June 29, 2025. Moses, who hails from Kogi State but resides in Umunede, worked with the deceased at a local oil mill. The suspect is said to have lured Victor to a remote palm tree plantation in Ute-Okpu under the pretense of showing him palm fruits.

While Victor inspected the trees, Moses reportedly attacked him from behind with a stick, fatally striking him. He then concealed the body with palm fronds and used Victor’s phone to call the victim’s family, demanding a ransom of N10 million.

Despite not knowing their loved one was already dead, Victor’s family managed to raise N300,000 and transferred it to the suspect’s Opay account. The family only later discovered the tragic truth after security agents tracked and apprehended the suspect.

Following his arrest, Moses allegedly confessed to the heinous crime. Victor’s remains were laid to rest on Friday, July 4, 2025, at his residence in Umunede, Ika North East LGA of Delta State.

This gruesome betrayal has sent shockwaves through the community, with many calling for stricter punishment for kidnappers and more security enforcement to protect innocent lives.
