Grief and outrage have swept through the s3x worker community in Akure, Ondo State, following the death of one of their own during a dispute with a male client over a N15,000 overnight service.
According to Hope Newspaper, the incident occurred at a brothel in the Cathedral area of Akure, where the deceased reportedly agreed to render services despite not feeling well. The male client allegedly paid N15,000 but later became aggressive when he felt unsatisfied.
A close friend of the deceased, speaking anonymously, stated that efforts were made to calm the client. However, he left and returned later to demand a refund. By this time, the lady was reportedly unconscious, and no one could access her phone to issue a refund.
“We begged him to come back later, hoping she’d recover,” her friend said. “If she had health insurance, maybe she could have gotten medical attention before things got worse.”
The situation escalated, prompting the intervention of the police. According to DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola, spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, the suspect later returned with other youths to retrieve the money. Police arrested the man and three accomplices, while others fled. An investigation is ongoing.
Other s3x workers in Akure are now calling on the government and brothel owners to implement safety policies, offer health coverage, and create channels to report abusive clients.
“I don’t like this job, but we don’t have other options. We face physical and emotional trauma daily,” said one of the workers. “We need protection, rules, and better care.”
Another, Patricia Uwonkolo, revealed that many rely on drugs and herbs to stay functional under intense pressure and stigma. “We need help, not judgment,” she added, urging authorities and NGOs to support vulnerable women in the trade.
