A brutal attack in Plateau State has left four persons dead—including a nine-month-old baby—and two injured, after gunmen ambushed farmers transporting tomatoes.

The victims were attacked on Wednesday in Nkiendowro community, Bassa Local Government Area, while returning from their farm to Farin-Gada market in Jos.
According to PUNCH Metro, Joseph Chudu, spokesman for the Miango Youths Development Association, confirmed the killings on Thursday. “Just yesterday, four people including a nine-month-old baby were killed in Nkiendowro community.
They went to pick tomatoes on their farms; when they loaded baskets in the car and were about to leave, they were ambushed at a bridge close to Tegbe-Nkiendowro community and then they were all killed,” Chudu told PUNCH Metro.
The four deceased—two women, one man, and the infant—were conveying farm produce when assailants opened fire. Survivors sustained gunshot wounds and are receiving treatment in a nearby hospital.

Chudu said the bodies have been evacuated to the mortuary, while security agencies have been alerted and details forwarded to Plateau State command for investigation. “I don’t know the type of democracy we are practising. Every day, people are being killed and the perpetrators are not brought to book,” he lamented.
Local residents expressed fear and frustration as attacks in surrounding communities have risen in recent days. Chudu noted that the incident has been reported to security agencies, but urged more proactive measures to protect rural farmers.
The Plateau State Police Command’s spokesman, Alabo Alfred, was unavailable for comment at filing time.
Security analysts say attacks on farmers not only endanger livelihoods but also threaten food supply chains. Community leaders are calling for increased patrols along farm-to-market routes and intelligence-led operations to track perpetrators.
They also emphasize the need for community policing and improved communication channels between villagers and security forces.
The ambush highlights persistent insecurity challenges in parts of Plateau State, where farmers and traders have been targeted in kidnappings and raids.

Authorities have been urged to accelerate investigations, apprehend those responsible, and reassure residents of their safety. Meanwhile, locals appeal for emergency support, including enhanced security presence, to prevent further tragedies.
