Mr. Daniel Onyishi, the Director of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Anambra State, has been successfully rescued following his abduction on June 12, 2025. The daring rescue came after days of intense efforts by security forces and operatives working in deep cover.
According to a press statement released on Sunday by Anambra State Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Onyishi was rescued alive and is currently receiving medical attention. His condition has been described as stable.
The operation was a joint success involving the Nigerian Police Force and undercover NDLEA agents. Zone 12 NDLEA Commander, Mrs. Florence Ezeonye, led the rescue team, while Anambra’s Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, confirmed the arrest of several suspects during the mission.
The Inspector-General of Police has since ordered a full-scale manhunt to bring all the perpetrators to justice. The rescue effort reportedly unfolded around the Awka axis, where Onyishi was originally abducted along Winner Road.
Security agencies in Anambra have applauded the bravery and swift coordination that led to the director’s recovery, warning kidnappers that the state is no longer a safe haven for criminal activity.
This incident adds to a growing list of abduction cases in Nigeria but also signals hope for improved inter-agency coordination and success in tackling high-profile kidnappings.
