At least 21 people have been confirmed dead and 10 others remain missing following a devastating flood disaster in Mokwa, Niger State, in the early hours of Thursday.
The natural disaster struck two communities — Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa — in Mokwa Local Government Area, after hours of torrential rainfall, submerging over 50 residential buildings and displacing families.
The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba-Arah, confirmed the grim development in an official statement.
“NSEMA is in receipt of a report of a deadly flood disaster that ravaged two communities of Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa in Mokwa town. The incident occurred last night during a torrential rain of very high intensity that lasted several hours,” Baba-Arah explained.
He added that brave local volunteers and divers, in collaboration with Mokwa LG authorities, were mobilised for search and rescue operations. So far, 21 bodies have been recovered, while over 10 residents are still unaccounted for.

“At present, three survivors — a woman and her two children — are receiving treatment at the Mokwa General Hospital for wounds and shock,” he said.
The tragedy comes just as Governor Mohammed Bago marked his second anniversary in office, casting a somber tone over planned celebrations.
While the search for missing persons continues, NSEMA has urged residents living near water bodies to relocate to safer zones during the current rainy season, warning that more floods could occur if proactive measures are not taken.
This disaster is a stark reminder of Nigeria’s vulnerability to climate-related emergencies and the urgent need for robust disaster preparedness, especially in riverine communities.
