WHO May Declare Monkeypox a Global Health Emergency Amid Rising Cases

The World Health Organization (WHO) is considering declaring monkeypox, also known as mpox, a major global health emergency due to rising cases in Africa. 

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus announced that a decision may be made during a meeting with stakeholders on August 14, 2024. 

The Africa CDC has also expressed concern, reporting a surge in cases across the continent. 

This potential declaration could mobilize resources for response and boost the production of diagnostic tools in Africa.
