Health: Type 2 Diabetes Recedes in UK Patients Following Strict NHS Diet
A third of UK patients on a strict diet provided by the NHS have achieved remission from type 2 diabetes.
This remission, a significant reduction in disease severity, has been reported in findings published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology journal.
Type 2 diabetes occurs when blood sugar levels become too high due to the body's improper use of insulin.
The NHS diet involves 12 weeks of low-calorie, nutritionally complete total diet replacement products, including shakes, soups, and meal-replacement bars. Participants also received counseling and support from their GPs.
Over 1,700 NHS patients were on this regime between September 2020 and 2022. Thirty-two percent of the 945 people who completed the program achieved remission, with an average weight loss of nearly 16kg.
Clare Hambling, NHS national clinical director for diabetes and obesity, emphasized that obesity is a major health threat, and the program's success shows it can be tackled effectively.
Participant Marie Laing praised the diet for transforming her lifestyle and improving her health.
