Why is Uber Trending?

San Francisco-headquartered ride-hailing giant Uber is trending across Nigerian business platforms and national headlines after officially winding down all operations in Nigeria on September 2, 2026.

The exit concludes a 12-year presence in the country since launching in Lagos in 2014.

Uber clarified that its departure—which also includes operations in Uganda—followed an internal review of evolving investment priorities across Africa.

However, corporate analysts and industry experts point to severe economic pressures facing the e-hailing sector in Nigeria:

  • Eroding Profit Margins: Persistent naira devaluation, steep increases in petrol prices following subsidy removals, and rising maintenance costs severely reduced driver profit margins under Uber's 25% commission structure.

  • Pricing Trilemma: Platforms faced an unsustainable balancing act between keeping fares affordable for inflation-weary passengers, meeting driver demands for higher earnings, and maintaining platform margins.

  • Market Realignment: Driver communities and riders are shifting toward competing platforms including Bolt, inDrive, and local e-hailing alternatives.
