Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has criticized politicians campaigning on promises to restore the fuel subsidy, describing the pledges as populist maneuvers designed to mislead voters ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking at the 7th Freedom Online Newspaper Lecture in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu responded directly to African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, who recently signaled plans to bring back the subsidy regime.
Sanwo-Olu argued that while removing the subsidy brought short-term economic pain, it eliminated a massive financial drain on national treasury reserves.
Citing National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) data, the governor highlighted Q2 2026 economic growth of 4.43%, foreign reserves reaching $53 billion, and falling inflation as early signs that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's reforms are stabilizing the economy.
