The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled plans to waive internet data costs for secondary and tertiary students accessing approved educational platforms, while announcing impending regulations on internet access for children under the age of 16.
Speaking at the launch of the Initiative for Zero-Rated Access to Educational Platforms and Content in Nigeria, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, stated that the intervention under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda seeks to eliminate connectivity costs as a barrier to quality learning.
Implemented under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), the policy will work alongside digital infrastructure tools like the Learner Identification Number to bridge education gaps for low-income and underserved communities.
