EFCC Recovers Over ₦1.23 Trillion and $684 Million in 34-Month Stewardship Review


Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja, the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, revealed that the agency recovered ₦1,233,612,040,411.11, alongside $684,478,457.32, £373,905.78, and €9,343,803.66 between October 1, 2023, and June 30, 2026. 


Describing asset recovery as a fundamental pillar of the anti-graft agency's strategy, Olukoyede emphasized that these recoveries reflect broader enforcement efforts to redirect proceeds of financial crime back into public interest and victim restitution.

The EFCC Chairman clarified that ₦397.26 billion (33% of total naira recoveries) was recovered directly for the Federal Government. The remaining ₦836.34 billion (67%) represented indirect recoveries made on behalf of state internal revenue services, federal ministries, departments, private entities, and individual victims.

Key Highlights from the EFCC Stewardship Address


The stewardship address outlined the commission’s enforcement statistics, asset forfeiture figures, and legislative policy contributions:


  • Detailed Recovery Breakdown: Beyond the primary naira and dollar sums, the EFCC recovered foreign currencies spanning 16 jurisdictions across five continents, including £373,905.78, €9.34 million, CFA58.73 million, and 463,660 Saudi riyals.


  • Allocation and Restitution Releases: Over ₦661.32 billion and $492.37 million have already been released to beneficiaries. This includes direct payouts to individuals and companies, as well as allocations directed toward government programs like the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation.


  • Tax and MDA Recoveries: The EFCC recovered ₦173.2 billion in federal tax obligations and ₦114.9 billion for state internal revenue services without imposing new tax liabilities. Federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) received ₦257.2 billion.


  • Prosecutions and Conviction Rate: Out of 49,673 petitions received, the commission investigated 39,615 cases, filed 14,476 cases in court, and secured 10,872 convictions—representing a 75.1% conviction-to-filing ratio.


  • Tangible Asset Forfeitures: Courts granted interim and final forfeiture orders for 10,053 assets, including 8,198 electronic devices, 1,177 real estate properties, 370 automobiles, 251 land plots, 32 commercial properties, 25 oil rigs/barges, 102 tonnes of solid minerals, and various digital assets. Disposal of final forfeited assets generated ₦12.07 billion for the Federal Government.
