Reno Omokri, Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, has ignited intense public debate after asserting that an average Nigerian can comfortably survive on N3,000 daily, arguing that international poverty metrics fail to reflect local economic realities.
Speaking during an appearance on Sunday Politics, Omokri addressed rising cost-of-living concerns and global financial benchmarks.
He revealed that he personally conducted market surveys alongside a journalist—without security detail—to price basic food staples such as yam, rice, maize, and fruits across local markets.
Based on his field findings, Omokri argued that domestic purchasing power in Nigeria stretches significantly farther than in Western nations.
Omokri further challenged standard poverty definitions established by multilateral financial institutions like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which historically benchmark extreme poverty at living on less than $2 per day.
He argued that uniform global indicators are fundamentally flawed because they do not account for regional price structures, local agricultural availability, and varying market dynamics across developing countries.
While acknowledging that an equivalent daily sum of under $2 would constitute severe poverty in developed economies like the United States, Omokri maintained that contextual analysis is essential when assessing economic well-being in Nigeria.
His statements have sparked widespread reactions across social media, with citizens and economic analysts debating the feasibility of a N3,000 daily budget amidst ongoing food inflation nationwide.
