As New York and New Jersey prepare to host the spectacular finale of the 2026 FIFA World Cup this Sunday, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has admitted he will remain strictly neutral.

Speaking to journalists at City Hall regarding which team he is backing, the mayor joked that his public support historically brings bad luck to his favorite teams.

Instead, Mamdani shared his immense excitement about the generational matchup between European champions Spain and South American champions Argentina.

He highlighted the incredible, real-life backstories anchoring the final, pointing out a famous viral photo from nearly two decades ago.

"As someone who considers himself technologically savvy and capable of distinguishing between AI and real images, I initially thought the image of Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal was AI-generated," Mayor Mamdani confessed.

The legendary photo features a youthful Lionel Messi bathing a infant Lamine Yamal in a blue plastic tub as part of a charity calendar event. Fast forward to today, and the two football icons are set to square off on the world's grandest stage at the 80,663-capacity New York New Jersey Stadium.

The final marks the 104th and concluding match of this historic, co-hosted tournament across North America.
