With exactly six months left before the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has significantly accelerated its logistical and tactical preparations.
The key nationwide elections are scheduled to take place on January 16, 2027, with the regional Governorship and House of Assembly elections following closely on February 6.
Official political campaigns are slated to launch on August 13 for national seats and September 9 for state-level positions.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), confirmed the heightened operations while hosting the United Kingdom High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery.
Amupitan revealed that the commission is implementing thorough cybersecurity audits, software updates, and redundancy platforms to ensure that the server glitches that occurred during the transmission of results to the IReV portal in 2023 do not happen again.
Furthermore, INEC is collaborating with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), led by CEO Abisoye Coker-Odusote, to cross-reference data and purge deceased individuals and ghost names from the voter register, which currently holds over 100 million entries.
The commission’s timeline also received a major legal victory after the Court of Appeal set aside an earlier Federal High Court verdict that had threatened to void parts of the official election timetable.
