National education portals, student union forums, and anti-corruption media beats across Nigeria are locked in heavy traffic spikes following a massive regulatory crackdown launched against several tertiary administrations over financial irregularities.
The institutional framework is trending aggressively because the Managing Director of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Akintunde Sawyerr, officially disclosed that the agency has opened an intensive investigation into 34 tertiary institutions.
The sweeping probe addresses widespread allegations that these schools have willfully withheld or delayed tuition refunds meant for hard-up students.
Because President Bola Tinubu’s student loan scheme kicked off mid-session, thousands of students had already self-funded their semesters before NELFUND's subsequent direct disbursements created duplicate tuition credits.
The narrative has provoked significant outrage across digital spaces, amplified by NELFUND actively enlisting a specialized five-person team featuring the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), internal auditors, and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to conduct forensic audits on-site at non-compliant campuses.
Concurrently, NELFUND revealed it has disbursed an additional ₦21.7 billion within the last two months alone, but warned it will block and deny future payments to any institution caught arbitrarily spiking tuition fees to exploit the loan infrastructure.
Students nationwide are actively using the trend to voice complaints against school bursaries while reviewing NELFUND's upcoming upgrade to an electronic token-based smartphone system.
