The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued an ultimatum to the Republic of South Africa, warning that "all options remain on the table" if state authorities continue to tolerate targeted xenophobic violence and extrajudicial killings aimed directly at Nigerian citizens.
The severe diplomatic warning was triggered by the gruesome, near-simultaneous murders of two Nigerian nationals—Emeka Charles Iroegbu and Musa Yunana Joe (popularly known as Big Joe)—on June 28, 2026.
Official forensic updates revealed that Joe was shot dead by unidentified street criminals directly outside his commercial retail shop in Witbank, Mpumalanga province.
In a separate incident that has provoked deep institutional outrage in Abuja, Iroegbu was allegedly subjected to horrific, illegal interrogation and torture techniques at the hands of active security operatives attached to the Tshwane Metro Police in Sunnyside, Pretoria.
"We wish to place the Government of South Africa on notice that if the situation continues to persist, all options remain on the table, some of which will be activated if the uncultured and provocative trend of intolerance and apartheid-style behaviour of South Africa against foreigners is not addressed," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared in an official press release.
Spokesperson for the Ministry, Kimiebi Ebienfa, highlighted a deeply troubling pattern of institutional lawlessness, noting that the identical Tshwane Metro Police officers implicated in the extrajudicial murder of another Nigerian citizen, Nnaemeka Mathew Andrew Ekpenyong, back on April 20, 2026, remain completely unpunished despite their identities being fully known to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Nigerian authorities heavily condemned highly toxic, derogatory public remarks from South African executives who generalized Nigerian business operators as drug traffickers.
While Ambassador Ninikanwa Okey-Uche confirmed that state-sponsored voluntary evacuations remain actively operational for registered citizens, the Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) has urged the diaspora to stay highly vigilant and quickly relocate away from violent border communities.
