A coroner’s court in the United Kingdom has formally ruled that Beatrice Solomon, a 27-year-old Nigerian caregiver who recently relocated to the country, died by suicide following ongoing struggles with her mental health.
The tragic case has once again brought the psychological and emotional challenges faced by diaspora migrants into sharp focus.
Beatrice, who moved from Nigeria to the United Kingdom on a skilled worker visa in November 2023, was found unresponsive at her residence on Norris Road, Stanfield.
The inquest heard that her husband, Damian Butler, discovered her in the toilet after returning home from his delivery shift.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene but she was tragically pronounced dead at 6:21 p.m. Following a thorough investigation, PC Hinchliffe of the local police command confirmed that third-party involvement had been completely ruled out.
During the official hearing, Butler testified that his wife’s mental health had declined significantly over the past year, attributing a large portion of her distress to ongoing bureaucratic difficulties involving Stoke-on-Trent City Council.
Pathologist Dr. Jones confirmed the cause of death as oxygen deprivation, while Coroner Li Hammond-Naylor noted that Beatrice had researched and planned her actions.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has frequently reiterated that migrants face heightened psychological risks due to family separation, cultural barriers, discrimination, and intense financial uncertainty, underscoring a vital need for easily accessible mental health support.
